During the recent Learning, Training, and Teaching Activity (LTTA) hosted by CEMforSMEs in Braga, participants delved into the intricacies of Circular Supply Chain Management (CSCM) within the agri-food sector.

This module was designed to equip small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the knowledge and strategies necessary to transition from traditional linear supply chains to more sustainable, circular models.

CSCM is a holistic approach that minimizes resource waste, reduces environmental impact, and fosters resilience in supply chains. In the agri-food industry, this involves rethinking how products are sourced, processed, transported, and disposed of. Key components of the circular model discussed during the LTTA include:

  • Resource Efficiency: Participants learned how to optimize resource use, reducing waste and enhancing sustainability throughout the supply chain.
  • Sustainable Procurement: The module emphasized the importance of responsible sourcing, prioritizing suppliers who align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.
  • Reverse Logistics: While not the main focus, participants also briefly explored how returning and recycling products could contribute to circularity.

The challenges of implementing CSCM were also a topic of discussion, including the need for redesigning business models and the complexities of integrating circular practices into existing systems. SMEs face hurdles like lack of recycling technology, regulatory gaps, and the need for significant capital investments to make these changes.

However, the benefits are substantial. By adopting CSCM principles, SMEs in the agri-food sector can reduce their environmental footprint, create new economic opportunities, and align with broader sustainability goals, such as those outlined in the European Green Deal.

As the project progresses, further refinements will be made to the training materials to ensure that they are practical, scalable, and tailored to the needs of SMEs. This LTTA marks a pivotal step in the project’s journey to helping businesses in the agri-food sector lead the way in sustainable supply chain management.
